Manganji Temple is said to have been founded by Sawara Juro Yoshitsura, the youngest son of Miura Osuke Yoshiaki, who followed Minamoto Yoshitsune west to fight in many battles.
The repository next to the main hall houses a standing statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon and a standing statue of the Bodhisattva Jizo. Both are designated by the Japanese national government as National Important Cultural Properties and are believed to be the work of Unkei's workshop. There is a gorinto pagoda that is said to be the tomb of Yoshitsura to the left of the main hall and up the stairs in the back. The garden is planted with red and white plum trees and Kawazu cherry trees.
