Manshoji Temple was built in 1194 during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) by Minamoto no Yoritomo, with Miura Osuke Yoshiaki as its founder.
Yoritomo dedicated the temple to Yoshiaki for his loyalty and integrity. When Yoritomo raised his army in Izu, the elderly Yoshiaki gave his life for the cause that would lead to the foundation of the Kamakura shogunate, as is implied by the temple name Manshoji, (lit: temple for the fulfilment of a wish).
The temple building was destroyed by fire 140 years later. However, in 1749, a Buddhist priest rebuilt the temple.
Since then, Manshoji Temple has affiliated with the Kenchoji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. The large azalea plant in front of the main hall is said to have been planted by Yoritomo himself.
