which took place at each location.
Shogyoin was built in 1199 by Wada Yoshimori as a family temple for his wife, Tomoe Gozen. The temple was originally located on the Norikoshi Coast in Akiya.
In 1499, Kanyo Yusou, the ninth head priest of Komyoji Temple in Kamakura, moved Shogyoin to its current location. It is said that Tomoe Gozen's hair was buried under a tree in the precinct. It is thought that at some point it was possible to admire a beautiful view of the sea from that location.
The main hall was destroyed by fire in 1640, but was rebuilt in 1659, after receiving a red seal letter of recognition from Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1648. The statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, which was in the Yakushi Hall is now enshrined in the main hall.
At Jorakuji Temple in Ashina there is a collection of five Buddha statues by Unkei commissioned by Wada Yoshimori, which is recognized as an Important Cultural Property.
