Tenyoin was founded in 1559 by Seiho Shonin with the financial support of Nagasawa Izumi as a branch temple of Komyoji Temple in Kamakura.
The statue of Yakushi Nyorai, officially named Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, was brought from Anrakuji Temple, which was built by Wada Yoshimori to protect the gate of his estate.
This statue of Yakushi Nyorai is said to have been carved by the famous monk, sculptor, and healer Gyoki.
Anrakuji was moved to Tenyoin in 1943. The statue of Wada Yoshimori and a mortuary tablet from 1213 are located in the main hall.
At Jorakuji Temple in Ashina there is a collection of five Buddha statues by Unkei commissioned by Wada Yoshimori, which is recognized as an Important Cultural Property.
